Up bright and early and on Thailand time and after breakfast we piled into three tuk tuks and headed off to the Royal Palace. The tuk tuk drivers I feel were on a mission to get there first as there was lots of vying for position.
It was cloudy and there had already been a shower and rain was forecast but luckily it never arrived. It was a warm approx 30 degrees.
The palace was absolutely superb and we even had the audio guide to explain all to us. Very useful. As Babs and Di had already been many times they headed off and did a bit of retail therapy and Babs even had her eyes tested and purchased new glasses.
After the palace we met up with them again and headed for the market for lunch. This was superb and so cheap. TB30 (approx 60p) for Tom Yam and I think TB50 for the other dishes (approx £1). The "lady" waitress then proceeded to guide us all the way to the toilets before sorting a boat for our trip down the river.
The boat was a long tail and we were the only occupants. This was fun as we relaxed down the river. We encouraged the driver to put his foot down and he sped along with the water rushing up the side of the boat. We stopped along side a seller in his little boat where beer (of course), water, bananas and rambutans were purchased. The driver was very grateful for the beer purchased for him :-)
Another stop was made where we purchased bread to feed to fish and oh what a size the fish were. It was a mad feeding frenzy.
Following the boat ride we headed in another set of tuk tuks to the reclining Buddha. This is an amazing sight, it is absolutely huge.
We then headed back to the hotel in yet another set of tuk tuks for a short while. Nigel and I thought we would try the roof top pool which although small was lovely. Cool when first getting in but not a problem in the sultry night time temperature. It was dimly lit and very atmospheric with a nice view of the skyline at night. Unfortunately we failed to take a photo.
After showering and changing into the trousers we had bought earlier (very native style) we headed out for dinner. Unfortunately the restaurant Babs was heading for seemed to have closed down so we headed back to another we had seen earlier. A lot more upmarket than we had previously eaten in but I have to say not a patch on anywhere we had previously eaten. It just goes to show that you don't always get what you pay for. After dinner Nigel and I headed off in search of a gift we had been tasked to buy while the others headed for more beer. After a gentle stroll we headed back to the throbbing Khaosan Road. The music really does need to be heard to be believed with bars competing to be the loudest where we retired at about 00.30 hence the reason the blog is a day late :-)
Tomorrow we leave Bangkok and head off to Kanchanaburi so will have more tales to tell then so for now good night.
